Good Morning Britain (often shortened to GMB) is a British breakfast programme, broadcast on weekdays from 6.00 am to 8.30 am on ITV. Good Morning Britain originally launched in 1983 for TV-am before being replaced by GMTV and later Daybreak. Good Morning Britain relaunched on 28 April 2014, after Daybreak was cancelled. Good Morning Britain has an audience share of around 18%, with around 700,000 tuning in.
So far there have been various main presenters; from the beginning in April 2014, the hosts were Susanna Reid, Ben Shephard, Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher, but in January 2015, Reid and Shephard became the two main hosts, with Hawkins reading the news and Fletcher, as sports editor, presenting the sports news. In September 2015, Shephard cut his appearances to just two days a week, with Kate Garraway covering the other three until November 2015 when Piers Morgan joined the presenting line-up. Garraway is currently a newsreader on Thursdays and a co-host on Fridays, often joined by Shephard.

Good Morning Britain is a news, lifestyle, showbiz and entertainment magazine programme which informs the day ahead, bringing the latest news, sport and weather headlines to the nation. The early-morning show is interspersed with celebrity interviews, human-interest features, showbiz updates, financial advice, political news, health items and live reports from locations across the UK and around the world.
2014
Good Morning Britain launched on 28 April 2014, with four main presenters - Susanna Reid, Ben Shephard, Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher. In-depth news stories were presented, as well as shorter bulletins and headline updates. Sports news was also featured with Fletcher, and Shephard also contributed when Fletcher was unavailable. Weather bulletins are presented by Laura Tobin, with Alex Beresford standing in when Tobin is unavailable. Entertainment news takes place with Richard Arnold. Interviews and discussions took place throughout the show, usually with two of the four presenters. On most days, a celebrity guest would appear at the end of the show.
Reid, Shephard and Hawkins all presented 4 days a week, with Fletcher presenting every day. When Reid wasn't present, Hawkins took her place. When Hawkins was unavailable or standing in for Reid, either Kate Garraway or Ranvir Singh would take her place. John Stapleton would present in place of Shephard when he was unavailable.
Between 13 June and 11 July, the team reported on the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Fletcher live from Brazil with all the highlights and reaction. They also employed special graphics and music adapted especially for the event.
During July, the presenters often went outside by the River Thames for parts of the show, when it was normally a nice morning. News bulletins were presented from the studio as normal.
Up until September, one of the presenting team would give a news bulletin at 9.00am for sister show Lorraine.
On 19 September, there was an extended Scottish Independence Referendum special from 6.00am until 10.00am, with Reid and Shephard presenting live from Edinburgh, while Hawkins and Singh presented from the studio in London.
On 2 December, Phillip Schofield co-hosted Good Morning Britain as part of a 24-hour TV presenting challenge for Text Santa. He also interviewed David Cameron live from 10 Downing Street later in the programme.
2015
The programme had a refreshed start to its second year on-air, with a new lighter theme tune, and slight alterations to the set. The desk had been made smaller, with the logo lit up at the front, and there are now only three seats behind it instead of four. Timings throughout the show were also changed. News bulletins remain the same, however only one sport bulletin takes place, and weather bulletins and regional news have moved their slots.
The presenting team also changed. Reid and Shephard continued as main presenters, while Hawkins became newsreader, and Fletcher was sports editor.
In January, Hawkins left for maternity leave. During this time, Garraway covered the majority of Hawkins episodes, with Stapleton and Singh also covering at times. When either Reid or Shephard were unavailable, Garraway became the main presenter. Once Hawkins returned in June, she became newsreader three days a week. Fletcher acted occasionally as a stand-in newsreader.
During the week of 13 April, Piers Morgan guest presented the show. He presented alongside Reid and Garraway, whilst Shephard was working elsewhere.
On 8 May, there was an extended General Election special from 6.00 am until 9.25 am, with Reid and guest presenter Tom Bradby presenting in the studio, replacing Shephard who was in the studio until 6.50 am when he went down to present from the River Thames to talk to voters.
On 14 May, sister show Lorraine was broadcast from the Good Morning Britain studio due to industrial action at ITV.
John Stapleton left the show in July, marking the end of his ITV Breakfast career.
On 24 July, Good Morning Britain broadcast a special programme live from inside Buckingham Palace with Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway. They presented a majority of the programme from inside the palace. Throughout the show, they broadcast a royal tour around all the state rooms reviewing some of the famous objects and paintings which are displayed. Laura Tobin was live from the Palace Gardens with the weather. Hawkins and Singh were in the studio with news bulletins.
On 4 August, the programme was interrupted by a fire alarm 7 minutes before the show was going to end. They were talking to Emmerdale stars Charley Webb and Anthony Quinlan who were live from West Yorkshire. The fire alarm sounded mid-interview and the studio had to be evacuated. They left viewers with a pre-recorded standby programme to fill the timeslot, followed by a pre-recorded episode of sister show Lorraine's 30th anniversary episode, before the programme came live on-air at 8.50 am.
On 1 September, ITV Daytime launched their biggest competition prize draw yet involving £1,000,000 and they called it 'Daytime, Make Me A Millionaire'. Andi Peters often came into the studio with a big glass cabinet full of £1,000,000 notes to encourage viewers to enter. The winners were announced on 21 September.
From September, Shephard had his shows cut down to two a week, with Garraway covering the other three.
In November, Piers Morgan joined the team, after his earlier guest week. He now presents three days a week. A few days later, the programme's political editor Sue Jameson left the show, to move to Australia.
2016
The format remained the same throughout 2016.
On 29 February, the programme was dedicated to the Oscars with specially made opening titles, theme music and graphics.
On 22 March, the show was extended to 10.30 am to cover the breaking news of the Brussels bombings. Morgan and Reid presented hard-hitting coverage of the news shortly after the report broke out at 7.15 am. The extended coverage meant that sister show Lorraine and The Jeremy Kyle Show were both cancelled, although Lorraine did start for the first 10 minutes. The following day, Reid presented coverage of the aftermath live from Brussels, while Morgan and Hawkins presented from the studio.
On 25 March, the programme was due to be broadcast but was unable to due to an evacuation at The London Studios due to a fire just before 7.00 am. The fire took 2 hours to fully extinguish. Filling the timeslot was a pre-recorded standby episode of the programme, with Shephard and Reid, followed by an episode of Dinner Date. Sister show Lorraine was broadcast as normal from 8.30 am as its Friday edition is normally pre-recorded.
Between 28 March and 8 April Jeremy Kyle and Mark Austin were guest presenters for the Easter break. Austin returned for a further 2 editions on 31 May and 1 June.
On 24 June, the show was again extended to 9.25 am to cover the result of the EU Referendum, with Morgan and Reid presenting from the studio. As the result was announced, Morgan and Reid presented hard-hitting coverage of the result, and they also covered the news of David Cameron's resignation.
On 22 July, Good Morning Britain broadcast a royal edition live from inside Buckingham Palace with Kate Garraway and Ranvir Singh. They presented a majority of the programme live from inside the palace. Throughout the show, they broadcast a royal tour around all the state rooms reviewing some of the famous objects and paintings which are displayed. Laura Tobin was live from the Palace Gardens with the weather. Hawkins was in the studio with news bulletins.
Morgan and Reid didn't present during August, due to holidays. During this time, Shephard, Garraway, Hawkins and Singh alternated. They presented coverage of the Rio Olympics for the majority of the month with Nick Dixon live from Rio de Janeiro with all the highlights. They had adapted special graphics and theme music to mark the event.
On 19 August, sister show Lorraine broadcast from the Good Morning Britain studio due to technical problems in its original studio.
On 5 September, coinciding with the return of Reid and Morgan, there was a refresh, with some minor changes made to the set, such as a new modified desk with new lighting and a perspex glass top. Furthermore, the wood panelling was replaced with white panels in the sofa area and weather area, with the latter receiving a new weather screen. The studio's accent lighting was also changed from orange to yellow. Graphic changes were also made, with a new over the shoulder graphic as well as a new Coming Up screen.
On 3 October, new weather graphics were introduced. These new graphics created a link between Good Morning Britain and ITV Weather.
On 9 November, the show was extended up until 9.25 am covering the latest news and results of the US presidential election, with Reid and Morgan live in New York City, Singh in Washington DC and correspondents with reaction from across the United States.
2017
On 26 January, newsreader and relief presenter Ranvir Singh was announced as the programme's new Political Editor.
On 20 March, they had updated their on-screen graphics, theme tune and logo. Their logo was updated to a more stylish look, their graphics were changed to a more square style and their theme tune was updated to a more formal, news-type theme. No set changes were made in this time, apart from the lit up logo on the front of the desk was swapped to their new one, with its lighting changed.
On 23 March, Morgan and Reid presented the show live from the eastern entrance of Westminster Bridge following the Westminster attacks the previous day. Shephard and Garraway also presented the show from the studio.
During the week of 10 April, Eamonn Holmes guest presented the show. He presented alongside Garraway and Hawkins for the week while Morgan and Reid were on their Easter break.
Temporary studio (2018)
On 21 February 2017, ITV announced that The London Studios where Good Morning Britain is currently being filmed is due to be moved out of its home in the spring of 2018. The news comes as ITV have decided to close the London studios to make way for its new HQ building in its place, meaning the studios and offices are due to be knocked down and have the new ITV London Studios HQ built in its place. The studio is due to be bigger and to be the most up to date television studio in the U.K. However, this means Good Morning Britain will be moved to a temporary studio some where in London for a number of years.
It was also confirmed that Good Morning Britain and other ITV Daytime shows will be moved back into the studios once building is completed; it's unknown whether the programme will return to the same studio when the building work is finished or if the show will be given its own studio along with other daytime shows.
